The Australian Levinson's "Like-A-Flash Senior" xtal set

A mate in Australia gave me some information on the Levinson's Radio (Sydney) "Like-A-Flash" series of crystal sets and even sent a couple of Aussie tuning caps to build it with. ( I had to do some serious horse-trading for them however!) The result is one of the best performing sets in my collection. The left-hand VC tunes the antenna...excuse me, aerial circuit and the right tunes the detector. The center switch sets the antenna to four taps on the antenna coil. The galena detector is homebrew, made from bits of bakelite, 1" diameter plastic tubing and brass hardware.

Here is a close-up of the detector tuning section of the "Like-A-Flash Senior" set. The Aussie VC's needed some moderate restoration to get the koala poop (just kidding, David!) and fifty years of outback grime off but they came up nicely. The coils are wound on wooden forms and mounted perpendicular to one another to minimize coupling. The wiring is all rubber coated to give a vintage appearance of having used "gutta-percha" insulated wire.

This view shows the antenna tuning section of the set. The antenna taps can clearly be seen and you get a better look at the Aussie VC and the coil details. The coil forms are made of wood veneer wrapped around two plywood end rings. The form is painted black, wound with enamelled wire and then varnished.
